How clean is your carpet?

How clean is your carpet?

The type and amount of dirt found in carpet flooring can vary widely depending on factors such as location, the amount of foot traffic and the activities conducted in the area. Other factors such as how often your carpet is hoovered or whether people take their outdoor shoes off can also make a huge difference in the amount and type of dirt found in your carpet.

The most common types of dirt found in dirty carpets include:

1. Soil

This is the most common type of dirt found in carpets and is brought in on outdoor shoes or by pets. The soil eventually sinks down between the carpet fibres and is not picked very well up by home vacuum cleaners. If you shook a carpet rug on a hard floor, you would be able to see this sandy soil all over the floor. The best way to avoid this is to remove outdoor shoes, which can easily be done in the home but of course this is not practical in places such as offices.

2. Dust

Where dust is allowed to settle, then dust mites can thrive. Carpets can trap dust which can attract dust mites. Dust mites are tiny, microscopic creatures, luckily invisible to the naked eye. They feed on dead skin cells shed by humans. Dust mites are one of the most common allergens and can be the cause of hay fever type symptoms.

3. Allergens

Allergens such as pet dander, mold and pollen can all be found in carpets and can cause allergies to those affected.

4. Pet Hairs

If you have pets, then their hair can accumulate in carpets.

5. Food Crumbs

Where food is eaten, particles of food can fall into carpets and get stuck in the carpet fibres.

6. Stains

Stains from various spills such as tea, coffee, wine, milk can all contribute to a dirty carpet.

Overall, the dirt found in dirty carpets is a mixture of organic and inorganic materials which accumulate over time due to regular use and insufficient cleaning. Regular vacuuming and professional carpet cleaning can help to remove this dirt and maintain a clean and healthy living environment.
